An Interview with Amorette as told to Green Edit Magazine
Q: Why did you decide to rebrand from Queen Los Angeles to Amorette? What inspired that shift?
Amorette:
The rebrand was a reflection of my own growth. Queen Los Angeles was born during my fashion era. It was bold, it was loud, and it was very much about the outer expression of style. But as I transitioned into the world of plants and interior styling, I realized my work had become more intimate, more grounded, and more connected to who I am at my core.
Amorette felt like the right evolution. It is my actual name, and using it allowed me to bring more of myself into the brand. It also gave me the freedom to blend all the parts of my creative life: my eye for color and form from fashion, my love of storytelling, and my deep roots in Los Angeles. This new chapter is me showing up fully, and inviting others to find beauty, joy, and a little magic in the spaces they live in.
Q: For those just meeting you, who is Amorette?
A: I’m a Black woman, a mom to two brilliant boys, a plant mom, a creative, and serial entrepreneur. I’m a hustler. I’m a third-generation Los Angeles native who believes deeply in the power of beauty, color, and community. My background is in fashion, and I bring that same eye for design, emotion, and detail into everything I create with plants. Whether I’m painting pots, designing a garden moment, or pulling off a high-end plant installation, I’m always thinking about how to spark joy and connection through nature.
Q: Your roots are in fashion. How did you end up in the world of plants?
A: I was in the fashion industry for over twenty years. I worked for several high-end brands and moved up from sales associate to merchandiser to manager, and ultimately, buyer. In 2010, I opened my own store in Los Angeles with my mother and sister. We had a good run. But when the world hit pause in 2020, I had to pivot. Fashion wasn’t going to work, no one was going anywhere, and supply chains were halted. I had rent to pay.
I created a plant pop-up at my shop in an effort to stay afloat. The plants took on a life of their own. Their beauty and life force completely transformed my space and my path. I fell deeply in love. For the past five years, I’ve been immersed in learning everything I can about plants. I am now an expert at plant care, and the many benefits they bring to us humans.
I’ve always loved color, shape, and form, and I was seeing those same principles come alive in nature. I applied everything I knew from fashion and merchandising to the plant world. When I went to source pots, the colors were dull, very last season. So I started painting them myself in vibrant, fresh tones.
Q: Speaking of pots… your signature painted pots are stunning. Where do those bold colors come from?
A: I love color, bold brights, soft neutrals, and everything in between. Cobalt blue is having a moment, it’s our best-seller right now. It’s rich, confident, and calming, and it makes green foliage pop. I started painting pots because there weren’t any planters on the market that were exciting. I even created a leopard-printed pot on terra cotta and as far as I know, I’m the first to do that. The colors, prints, and designs are a clear nod to my fashion roots.
Q: You’ve worked with some major names. Tell us more.
A: I’ve been lucky to collaborate with iconic institutions like Ron Herman in West Hollywood and The Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills. My work has been featured in The LA Times, Sunset Magazine, and even Vogue. I’ve been recognized by two of my heroes, Issa Rae and Beyoncé, which still feels surreal. But my proudest work is just beginning.
Q: Tell us about your partnership with The Plant Chica and your new nonprofit, Plant a Revolution .
A: Yes! Plant a Revolution is a labor of love co-founded with my friend Sandra Mejia, founder of The Plant Chica. Our mission is to use the beauty and magic of plants to uplift underserved communities in L.A. We’re starting with greenery, but it’s really about healing, hope, and creating joyful spaces for our people. Teaming up with The Plant Chica has been a huge blessing. We are able to support each other in so many ways. You can currently find my products in her Leimert Park Greenhouse. It is such a magical place. I am there a lot! Sandra has been kind enough to share her space with not just me but several other business in an onsite business residency program that we call Leimerch. The Plant Chica is a magical place and Sandra is truly an amazing person. I am super grateful that we have found a way of collaborating that supports us both and allows us to have a bigger impact in our community.
Q: What’s the energy you want people to feel when they bring one of your plants home?
A: Peace. Joy. Magic. I want them to feel like their space just shifted, like they added something alive, beautiful, and intentional. That’s the magic of plants. They breathe life into a room literally and energetically. I want people to feel uplifted and loved.
Q: What’s next for Amorette?
A: I want to focus on delivering beautiful healthy potted plants locally while continuing to paint, design, and pour into my community. I also plan to expand into more plant accessories like gloves, watering cans, tool kits etc. I’d love to collaborate with Gucci Garden. That would be a dream come true. I started my fashion career on Rodeo Drive in my 20s. Reimagining luxury fashion through the lens of plants feels like a full-circle moment. Fashion may have been my first love but plants feels like my legacy.
Q: What do you believe the role of a business should be in the world right now?
A: I believe businesses should reflect real values and take real action. There’s no room for neutrality anymore. I believe in justice and equity. That Black Lives Matter. That Palestine should be free. That no human is illegal on stolen land. That everyone deserves beauty, opportunity, and safety. I stand against hatred and violence in all of its forms.
That also means standing against racism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia — all of it. I believe in community care. In joy as resistance. In protecting our environment and our people. I believe in science. And I believe in building a brand that doesn’t just sell — but gives, grows, and stands for something.
